Social Sciences University of Ankara (SSUA) Department of History, in collaboration with the Historians Association, organized a roundtable discussion titled “Military History Studies: Ottoman Land Wars” on May 9-10, 2025. The workshop, held at ASBU's Fuat Sezgin Hall, was organized by Research Assistant Dr. Göksel Baş from our university's Department of History.
The organizing committee included Prof. Dr. Feridun M. Emecen (29 Mayis University), Prof. Dr. Kayhan Orbay (Middle East Technical University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Kolçak (Istanbul University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Gezer (Hacettepe University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülay Yılmaz Diko (Akdeniz University), Dr. Zeynep Kocabıyıkoğlu Çeçen (Royal Holloway, University of London), Zeynep Nevin Yelce (Sabanci University), Dr. Mehmet Fatih Baş (National Defense University), and Research Assistant Dr. Göksel Baş. The event planning process was carried out in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Selim Ferruh Adalı, Head of the ASBU History Department.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selim Tezcan, a faculty member of our department, served as the moderator of the meeting, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evrim Türkçelik and Dr. Cumhur Bekar served as discussants.
Within the scope of the workshop, original approaches, methods, and sources related to Ottoman military history were discussed, and an interdisciplinary discussion platform was created with the participation of academics, researchers, and historians specializing in the field. Ottoman land wars were evaluated in a multifaceted manner, covering tactics, strategy, logistics, and political dimensions. The meeting, which was attended by numerous academics from various universities in Turkey and abroad, made significant contributions to the field.
