SSUA held a distinguished panel discussion that revisited the pioneering writers of early Republican-era Turkish literature and academically examined the spirit of the period. The program, prepared by the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, featured in-depth assessments reflecting the cultural, literary, and social transformations of the early Republican years.
The panel began with a meaningful opening speech by Prof. Dr. Turan Karataş, Head of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature. The speech addressed the multi-layered effects of the intellectual and aesthetic renewal undertaken by literature in the early years of the Republic from an interdisciplinary perspective. SSUA Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Münire Kevser Baş then took the floor, emphasizing the university's academic responsibility for literary studies and evaluating the traces left by early period writers on today's intellectual world.
Prof. Dr. Baş's speech highlighted that the Early Republican Era was notable not only for its political and social transformations but also for its powerful advances in the field of literature. She stated that the panel was organized to discuss the perspectives that Refik Halit Karay, Memduh Şevket Esendal, and Sabahattin Ali, who reflected the spirit of this era in their works, brought to our literature. Prof. Dr. Baş stated that the intellectual continuity of early Republican literature was evaluated through Karay's realistic approach, which strengthened the tradition of satire and depictions of Anatolia; Esendal's contributions, which established simple Turkish and a modern understanding of storytelling; and Sabahattin Ali's works, which deepened the social realist line. It was stated that the three writers left a lasting legacy by bringing the cultural and social reflections of the transformation in the early years of the Republic to the literary scene; it was emphasized that the panel was held with the aim of passing on this legacy to younger generations.
The session organized within the scope of the panel was moderated by Dr. Murat Cankara. Throughout this session, the three great writers of the Early Republican Period were discussed in detail, both in terms of their texts and the spirit of their era.
Prof. Dr. Ayşe Demir, a faculty member at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, presented Sait Faik Abasıyanık's original contributions to Turkish short story writing with poetic depth and scientific insight. The author's sensitive interpretations of the relationship between the individual and society and the unique flow of his language were presented as elements that defined the transformation of modern short stories.
Associate Professor Koray Üstün read Memduh Şevket Esendal's literary world through the simple but deep traces of everyday life. Esendal's approach, which transformed the social fabric of the Republic into narrative, and the simple style he brought to Turkish were presented with a functional understanding in terms of both period and language.
Dr. Ersin Çetinkaya, on the other hand, academically evaluated Sabahattin Ali's literary methods, his original perspective on social realism, and his sensitivity that intersects literature and politics. The layered structure of the themes explored in Ali's texts, reflecting the social atmosphere of the period, was addressed through a comprehensive analysis.
The panel attracted the attention of participants with its intellectual intensity and literary richness, once again highlighting the effects of the cultural heritage of the Early Republican Period on today's literary climate.
